What You Need to Know About Water Damage and Spring Snow Melting

BLOG Posts

A home's gutters bend under the weight of melting snow and ice.Let’s face it, your carpet is in a constant battle against the elements.

Even though your carpeting and rugs don’t go outside, they feel the effects of the weather whenever someone goes from outside to inside. What is worse, even if you and your family take your shoes and boots off at the door, there is always the chance for snow or ice to creep into your home. In spring, your carpeting or rugs have a risk for water damage when the snow and ice melts.

Keep reading this article to learn how to prevent water causing minor damage (that our carpet cleaning can help solve) or major damage (that our water mitigation can help solve).

1. Remove Any Blocks from Your Gutters and Downspouts

It is important to clear any blocks from your gutters and downspouts to ensure water and melted snow flow away from your home. This step is a great one to take during the fall. If dead leaves get left behind, they can become the sludge that gums up your water management system.

2. Clear Snow Quickly

Indoor winter water damage management starts with outdoor snow management. Shovel the snow from around your foundation. This shoveling includes what is above your foundation. Try to clear any overhanging snow that will eventually run off to your gutters and into your drainage system.

3. Manage Your Shovelled Snow Piles

Clearing the snow is good, but make sure not to just shift the problem. Check where your snow piles are and avoid making a pile near any creases or toward the foundation of your home. Play to the angles by grouping your snow piles on areas sloping away from your house.

4. Seal Your Foundation

To keep water out, you have to have a strong defense. The defense of your house against water starts with sealing your foundation. The best time to seal your foundation is during the house’s construction. If your house was already built, you will need to dig around your house’s foundation to access and seal it.

5. Use a Sump Pump in Your Basement

At some point, water will find its way inside your house. At that point, a quality sump pump is your best friend. Not only do you need to have a sump pump, it needs to be quality - meaning working and working well. This all comes down to proper installation and maintenance.
